Travel Insurance Advice from the Association of British Insurers

Drink and Drug Related Incidents Could Invalidate a Travel Insurance Claim

Everyone heads out on holiday for different reasons and what takes place when they are abroad will naturally differ accordingly. However, many people heading abroad are still doing so without adequate travel insurance covering them and one of the reasons is that people are confused by the different policies that are on offer – according to a recent press release from the Association of British Insurers (http://www.abi.org.uk). The report comes as the ABI launches a travel insurance guide, which also highlights the fact that many travellers are unaware of what might invalidate their insurance.

There are three things that the ABI is advising people to keep in mind when it comes to taking out travel insurance, from shopping around for the right policy to suit particular needs to ensuring that their medical conditions are disclosed in case of emergency treatment abroad. However, another piece of advice is an interesting one and highlights an area that some might not have considered before heading off on their holidays – incidents related to heavy drink or to drug use could invalidate an insurance claim.

“Buying travel insurance can be really complicated, particularly for those with pre-existing medical conditions or those wanting more than just medical cover,” said Rochelle Turner, the Head of Research as Which? Travel. “Which? Travel research shows that, in the last year, 10 per cent of people were disappointed to find that they couldn’t make a claim against the policy they had purchased.

“The work that the ABI have been doing will help in the move to clarify what insurance does and doesn’t cover so people are better informed and can buy policies that are right for their travel needs.”

There could be an abundance of people affected in these areas in the coming months; according to the ABI around 15 million people are expected to go on holiday abroad this year and whilst many of them will return without any hassle, there will be many that see incident where travel insurance could come in handy. As ever, it points out that saving money by avoiding travel insurance could be a decision one regrets if something is to go wrong.
