Holidaymakers Willing to Potentially Risk Everything to Save Money Whilst Away

One in Fifteen Willing to Go on Holiday Without Any Form of Travel Insurance According to New Survey

Travel insurance is something that has been in the news a lot recently, largely in relation to the threat of BA strikes, with insurers warning that some providers will not pay out in such conditions (highlighting the necessity to be familiar with the small print). Today, however, it is in relation to a new study that has been revealed by Direct Line (http://www.directline.com), who have discovered that a surprising amount of holidaymakers are willing to cut travel insurance out of the equation altogether to save money.

According to the Direct Line survey, which was sourced from 2,007 adults in the UK and carried out by Opinium in January, 1 in 15 adults are willing to give up travel insurance to save money on the holiday budget. To put it another way, if the figure is representative of the United Kingdom as a whole it amounts to 3.2 million people. It means that a large number of people are willing to risk health, luggage and other factors when they set off for a different climate.

“Looking for a great holiday at a great price is the first thing on most people’s minds when they want to get away,” said Tom Bishop, the Travel Insurance Head at Direct Line, “One thing that’s easy to forget is how much it would cost if things went wrong. Going without travel insurance could mean shelling out for lost luggage, medical expenses, or even losing the cost of your holiday if you have to cancel.”

He goes on to advise customers on annual policies, which cover customers all year round, and to ensure there is travel insurance in place before they even book.

The Direct Line study also discovered which groups of people are more likely to forgo travel insurance, with men more likely to cut it out than women (9% as opposed to 4%), with those in London more likely than those in locations like Yorkshire and Humberside and younger travellers aged between 18-34 more likely than those above 55.
