Make Sure You Don’t Break Down at Christmas

Warning From Leading Comparison Site

With the Christmas season in full swing it is easy to get swept up in the festive celebrations, with present shopping and all of the other traditions beginning to get under way.

But that does not mean people should let their guard down and price comparison website MoneySupermarket.com is warning motorists in particular that they should make sure they take care behind the wheel. By doing so they could avoid breaking down during the festive season and they could also avoid being involved in something more serious.

MoneySupermarket.com cites 33% of accidents that happen in the dark (according to the Department for Transport annual report 2008), which does not bode well during the winter months when the sun goes down earlier in the evening, whilst snowy and icy conditions account for 4,500 accidents a year.

So to avoid being part of this statistic, MoneySupermarket.com has issued a range of recommendations for motorists during the month of Christmas – advice that will surely come in handy for other parts of the year as well. These include general maintenance issues such as checking oil levels, lights, tyres (including spare) and anti-freeze and ensuring that the car is equipped with safety devices such as first aid kits, jump leads, torches, reflective jackets and so forth.

When driving, motorists are encouraged to do so safely, keeping a safe distance from other road users and taking care in cold or icy conditions.

“While there is no good time to suffer a vehicle breakdown it is especially worrying at this time of year with nights drawing in earlier and temperatures dropping,” said Steve Sweeney, the head of motor insurance at MoneySupermarket.com.

“It is worth remembering however, that no matter how well you look after your car and how carefully you drive, you cannot guarantee you will never break down. Drivers should ensure they are prepared for this, and also be aware of other, possibly less responsible drivers around them.”

So unless people want to be making a claim on their motor insurance this Christmas then they should be extra careful. In addition, the site encourages drivers to ensure that they have adequate breakdown cover so that they will not be left in a difficult situation should it arise.
