Motorcycle insurance is becoming all the more important as, sadly, motorbike accidents seem to be on the increase on Britain’s roads. We’ve all seen the very disturbing adverts on television and the message should certainly be hitting home; motorbike riders are very exposed and are very at risk on the roads- last year a staggering 20%, that’s one fifth, of all accidents on the roads involved a motorbike in one way or another. If you like to hit the road on two wheels, get yourself covered now or you will end up paying later. Thankfully, motorbike insurance, just like car insurance, is mandatory in this country but there are different levels to which you can insure yourself and different costs related to these different levels.
Third Party Motorcycle Insurance
There are three basic types of motorbike insurance which an individual can choose from; these are generally the same as one would expect from car insurance (those who have read other parts of this website, or are already schooled in the basics of insurance will no doubt already know these three types but, for the benefit of the novices out there, of whom I am sure there are plenty, it is worth covering this ground again). The least covering type of insurance you can get for a motorbike is third party. This simply covers any damage which may be incurred on another person or vehicle as a result of you or your motorbike.
If you are, sadly, involved in an accident, then this type of cover will not pay for any damage to your bike, it is merely there to protect the other road users and help them with the costs of an accident. If something was to happen, and you had tried to save money by having the legal minimum cover then you could be left seriously out of pocket. The next rung up from this is theft and third party; with this type of policy you would get all the benefits of third party insurance but you would also be covered if your bike was stolen and the financial losses you may be faced with as a result of this. However, despite this perk, you would still not be covered if you were to have an accident; you would need to pay for any repair work yourself.
Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance
If you don’t fancy paying out yourself, then fully comprehensive insurance is the type which you need to be looking at. Not only would your motorbike be covered in the event of a theft but both you and other road users would be covered if an accident were to take place. This is naturally the most expensive type of insurance to get but, by using price comparison websites, you are likely to be able to find a very reasonable quote and may even be able to take advantage of some of the many perks which are currently being offered by various companies. Some policies, for instance, will repay you your bikes market value if it gets stolen whilst some companies also offer you the chance (for a little bit more money) to insure the different items of kit which come with your bike, such as your helmet and your leathers. Thanks to the EU, policies purchased in European countries allow you to bike through countries in the EU at no extra cost. As is the case with car insurance, different variables such as the age of your bike, its mileage and your own driving record will all affect how much you end up paying for your premiums.I know what you may be thinking, this is all well and good but I don’t just want a run of the mill insurance policy; I have a custom-made bike and thus I want a policy which befits my bespoke way of biking. Well, there are policies which do this for you but they just take a little bit of extra research. Either use a normal internet search engine or you can even contact your local vehicle authority in order to get more information about the policies which are going to suit you best. This type of insurance has much higher premiums because most custom bikes are involved in racing and off-road pursuits which result in a lot more damage being done to the bike. If you have this sort of lifestyle then tailor-made insurance is certainly going to suit you much more and will be worth the extra work you have to put in. Why put in so much work into your bike and then not protect it to the proper level? Biking is an exhilarating but dangerous pastime and insurance is vital to ensure that you and other people on the road are covered properly. Getting documents in order might not be exciting, but it certainly is necessary.
